The day i did my First Oil change!

I remember the first day i did my first oil change. i was eight and my father had a burgundy lincoln town car, he was always taking car of his car and what not so one day i guess he decided it was time to teach me the importance of performing an oil change. I was busy playing ball with my friends yet just seeing our family car on top of jack stands did inquire my interest so i decided to take a “gander”. I walked over to him and said “hey pops, what’s wrong with the car” He didnt say anything, my dad was generally a angry yet quiet man all he did was point at the 13mm wrench and said pass that over to me. He untightened the oil nut and let the old dirty oil flow inside a medium sized pan, he said the first step in owning a vehicle “you have to change the oil every 3k miles”. I was eight and thought man i cant wait to own car so i can drive around and look “cool” so i listened some more.

He continued by saying ” Oil is what keeps the engines insides running happy just like the food that enters your tummy basically bad oil bad engine bad food unhappy you! I change the oil every 3k miles along with the filter and the old girl has never let me down engine wise that is :) but the importance of what im telling you is if you dont change your oil you will not have a happy car, if you dont have a happy car, you’ll have an empty wallet!”

It’s been years now and every time i change my oil i remember that memory. I one day hope to teach my kid the same lesson.

So what about my readers? When did your first oil change lesson took place?

    Video Tutorial

Doing an oil change is rather simple it becomes even simpler when you watch our video on how to do an oil change. We describe the oil change step by step insuring a safe and overall quick procedure. We are actually glad you are watching this video as when you perform your oil change your self at every three thousand miles or every three months, you save your self some money. Which in these citric economic days every penny counts! Enjoy the video.

Plan to change your motor oil every three thousand miles or every three months which ever occur first. This will lead way to keep your motor running happy and healthy for years on end!  The necessary tools to complete an oil change is a socket set a oil drain pan and a jack and jack stands for safety. Instead of using a socket set you can also use a wrench set which is pretty much which most mechanics use and can be cheaper than a socket set. Run the car for 10 minutes if the engine is cold to warm up the oil before you drain the oil, warm oil drains faster than cold oil park the car on a level surface either chock the rear tires with a chock or engage the parking brake. Now turn the engine off and jack up the car so you can get underneath to drain the oil!

Don’t forget to use the jack stands for safety. Open up the hood of your car place the new oil and funnel on top of the engine so you don’t forget to fill the car up with oil after draining the old oil. Make sure the car is securely supported on the jack stands before you crawl underneath of your vehicle. Never get under a car that is only supported by a jack. A pair of jack stands cost less than twenty dollars and if you wish to change your own oil regularly then investing in a pair of jack stands is ideal.

Once the car is securely supported crawl underneath the car, locate the oil drain plug underneath the car you can consult the owner’s manual for the exact location, place the oil drain pan underneath the oil drain plug to catch the old oil. Loosen the plug either with a socket wrench or a normal wrench which ever you have. Remember to turn counter clockwise and remove the oil drain plug fully once it is opened up. Remove the plug by hand when it is moving freely to make it safer and quicker for yourself. Be prepared for a rush of hot oil, let the old oil drain into the oil pan and hold on to the oil plug. Once the oil is fully drained reinstall the oil plug back into it’s place always start to thread the bolts by hand to prevent cross threading. Now wipe off the drain plug area and begin tightening the oil plug DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.

Now locate the existing oil filter. Position the oil pan underneath the oil filter to catch the draining oil. Remove the filter with an oil filter wrench or by hand (NOT RECOMMENDED). Screw the new oil filter in by hand. Tighten as tight as possible by hand. Do not over tighten with the oil filter wrench.

Locate  and remove the oil filler cap on top of the engine. Place the funnel and fill up the engine with oil… 4-5 quarts are generally needed please consult your owner’s manual for  what type and how much oil is needed in your vehicle once you have filled up the oil run the engine for a minute and check the dipstick to see if you have over filled or if you need to add more oil if necessary. Check for leaks and make sure you clean up after yourself. If there are any drops of oil on the floor wipe them with a rag.

Dispose of used oil properly either take it to a recycling center with your oil filter or to a local mechanic shop so they can dispose of the oil properly.

You have now changed the oil in your vehicle congratulations you have saved yourself some money!

    Written Tutorial

Cars are as delicate as human’s just because they are mechanical doesn’t mean they don’t need some maintenance!  Giving your car an oil change at every 3k miles means more enjoyable miles for you and less of a headache for the future. Ok let’s begin step by step on how you would be able to perform an oil change on your vehicle!

Be smart and please don’t change your oil when it’s piping hot, you might get severely burned.

    What you would need

A decent Ratchet or open end wrench to unscrew the oil plug.

An oil filter wrench or if your handy enough you can even remove the oil filter with your own bare hands ( Proceed with Caution not really a smart idea)

Oil catch so you can put in the used oil safely.

Funnel to put the new oil into the engine without making a huge mess!

New oil filter so you can replace the old oil filter

New oil, Make sure it matches the requirements in your owners manual.

Clean rag or any type of rag because you might need to wipe your hands or wipe an area that you accidentally spilled oil on.

Alright let’s get this party started!

    oil change

Changing the oil in your car’s engine is one of the most important things

Changing the oil in your car’s engine is one of the most important things you can do to prolong the life of your engine. While different automotive manufacturers have different guidelines for the recommended oil change schedule (check owner’s manual for this information), a good “rule of thumb” is that you should change your car’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If you do not tend to put a lot of miles on your vehicle, then a secondary guide is to change your oil every 6 months. With the popularity of “high performance” engines, and aftermarket engine parts meant to increase power, expensive synthetic oils have risen in popularity.

Synthetic oils have substantially increased performance in an engine, and there is a much longer period of use. Synthetic oils typically only need to be changed at 7,500 to 10.000 mile intervals (check manufacturers recommendation, of course). This increased performance does come at an increased price, however… often twice or three times as much more expensive than your regular oils. Changing your own oil is quite easy, and does not take a lot of time. The only “specialized” equipment needed would be an automotive jack, jack stands (for safety) and something to catch your used oil after you drain it from your engine. The jack and stands can often be purchased for around $40 to $50 dollars, and are a sensible investment if you like to work on your vehicle. After the initial equipment has been purchased, you should be able to change your own oil for well under $15 dollars, versus the $25-$50 per change that seems to be common at auto dealers and garages. To begin, jack your car up high enough so that you may place your jack stands underneath the car’s front axle. Underneath the (cooled-down, please) engine, you will need to locate your oil pan. For example, my Nissan’s oil pan is about the size and shape of a small shoebox.

There will be a drain plug located on the bottom of the pan. Place whatever you are using to catch the oil underneath the drain and remove the plug. Let it drain completely before you replace the plug. After the oil pan has been emptied, locate your oil filter on the side of the engine. Oftentimes, this can easily be removed by hand, but if it’s stuck, you can either use a specialized wrench (easily found at your auto parts store, and quite inexpensive), or drive a long-bladed screwdriver through it, and turn it off with that. There will be oil inside of it, so be careful not to spill any on you. Replace the old filter with a new unit, rubbing the rubber gasket with a little clean oil to ensure a good seal on the engine. Hand-tightening the new filter is usually sufficient, but if you are using a filter wrench, remember that you do not need to “crank” it as tight as you can. After the new filter is on and after double-checking that the drain plug has been re-inserted, and tightened, you may now take the car off of the jack stands. At this point, you are ready to refill the engine with the correct amount and type of oil. Check your owner’s manual for this information. Gather your wasted oil and filter and take it to a recycling center, if available in your city, or take it to a garage or auto parts store for safe disposal. Do not dump waste oil on the ground or into the sewer system, as it is a toxic material. Congratulations! Through this easy, and inexpensive, process, you’ve just prolonged the life of your car’s engine!

OIL CHANGE The most important factor for the safety of your car

OIL CHANGE The most important factor for the safety of your car is regular maintenance of all its parts. For better performance, your car’s engine oil need to be changed regularly. If we fail to do this, eventually the oil breaks down and your filter become blocked with contaminants which will affect the smooth running of your car. The frequency of oil change depends on the type of car and your driving lifestyle. Changing oil for you car is simple and economical but you need to keep some things in mind when you decide to oil change on your own. Here are a few steps for changing the oil in your car:- • Assemble all the required equipments needed for the process Open End wrench New oil New oil filter Funnel Old catch container Clean cloth You have to begin with the process only after your engine cools down for a few hours.

Don’t try to change your oil while the engine is hot as the warm oil will burn you profusely. Next make sure you have a solid level ground to jack up your car safely. You could also put a cardboard under the engine incase of spills. Always make sure you have all the required equipments at hand reach before you begin. • Draining the Old Oil The first step is to drain out the old oil from inside the engine. At the bottom of the engine there is a big blot which needs to be opened to drain out the old oil. Make sure you place an old container beneath it so that all the old oil drains into the container. Wait till all the old oil drains out and then replace the blot into the bottom of the engine. This may take some time but be patient. There are places where they recycle old oil. If you know of such a place, it is always better to give it there as disposing used old oil may be difficult and unsafe. Most of the service gas stations may recycle used old engine oil. • Remove the Old Oil Filter Next using an old filter wrench, turn the filter counter clockwise to remove it. You need to be careful as it is full of the old oil that may fall off.

Depending on the model of the car, some filters can be accessed from the front, but most of the car engines have their filter accessed from under the car. • Attach the new old filter Before you install the new oil filter, grease the rubber gasket on the end of the filter with some new oil. Then fill the new oil filter to about 2/3 new oil. If you add more you may spill a bit when you screw up the cap. As the new filter has oil in it carefully screw it clockwise into place. You can screw it using your hand. If you use a wrench you may over tight it which may strip its threads and cause a leak. Similarly, the screws should also not be loose as it may cause a leak too. So just tighten it till your hands can turn it no more. • Fill the new oil Next, you can open the oil fill cap and pour in the oil using a funnel to avoid any spills. Find out from your owner’s manual how much oil your engine holds. Fill in the required amount of oil.

Then you need to check the oil to know the oil level. If you think it is less than the required amount then you need to add more until you are satisfied with the oil level. Make sure you close the filter with the oil cap. This is very important as we may forget to do that and the result will be disastrous. Spare enough time to do the oil change as it has to be done slowly and carefully. Make sure you don’t do it in a hurry as it may result in a disaster. Take your time and do the above explained steps in a safe environment. HAPPY DRIVING!

Oil change is essential in maintaining your car’s engine

Oil change is essential in maintaining your car’s engine condition. Engine wear is most notable due to lack of sufficient oil changes performed throughout its life. Warming engine to its operational temperature is recommended for an oil change but I would differ on this. As long as oil is changed periodically there is no need to run the engine before you change the oil. It becomes more cumbersome to change oil when you heat up the engine. The oil that settled down at the bottom of the oil pan get splashed up to valve housings and they don’t come back down soon enough and that old oil would be a part of new oil you will put into the engine. It is just like looking at your shampoo bottle. When you use it shampoo will coat inside of the bottle but overnight, the filmy shampoo would come down and leave the inside of the bottle clean. That is what you would want when you change the oil in your engine.

With oil settled down at the bottom of oil pan, the engine is relatively clean of old oil. You just drain the old oil and wait a little to let as much old oil as you can to drip out. Changing oil filter at the same time is essential since the oil filter contain significant amount of old oil and its filter has captured any debris. After you place an oil pan underneath the engine then you take out the oil plug and then the oil filter. You should use a dedicated oil filter removal tool for this. The oil filter tends to get very slippery. You do not want to spend too much time just to loosen the oil filter struggling with it. You let oil drip out for a while. 5 minutes or so would be enough to get majority of old oil. You put the oil plug back in. Do not tighten the plug too much. You don’t want to strip its thread. But You do not want the plug coming off when you are driving your car so you should check the owner’s manual for how much torque to use. Put the oil plug in then the new oil filter.

Use a drop or two of oil to lubricate its seal for a better seat. You do not want an oil leak after changing the oil filter. Again you should find out how much torque is right for installing the new oil filter. You should not over fill your engine with excess oil. It may lead to valve problems later on. Using the dip stick to see how much oil you have put in is useful. I would like oil to be somewhere between middle to top, but not too close to the top. If you will put additives that help the engine reduce its friction, some really work, you should put these in after you put maybe half a quart of oil to mix with the additives you are going to put in. After putting additives in pour more oil to appropriate amount. You should be careful not spill old oil on the ground. Old oil is an environmental contaminant and it should be mopped clean whenever you change.

Changing the oil and oil filter in your vehicle is important

Changing the oil and oil filter in your vehicle is important regular maintenance to help extend the life of your engine. It is fairly simple and doesn’t require a tool chest full of tools. If you are not familiar with the terms and references used here go ask someone who does or look them up in a repair manual or online because this does need to be done correctly. You will need a wrench for the oil plug, check to make sure you have right size wrench, something to drain the used oil in and an oil filter wrench. You will also need some ramps or jack stands to have a safe way to get under your vehicle unless it sits high enough to crawl under it or unless you have the use of an auto shop with a car lift on a pit to pull over. There are probably places where you can take the used oil to have it recycled. Just call around and ask. Get your supplies wherever auto parts are sold. You can either look up the make, model and engine size of your vehicle to get the correct oil filter, the proper weight of oil ,( 5w30 for an example,) and the amount of oil needed to refill your engine or ask an employee for help.

First start your engine and let it warm up. This helps the oil to drain more efficiently. Then pull your front wheels up on ramps or jack up the front of your vehicle and put it on jack stands unless, as mentioned above, you have the use of an auto shop with a lift or a pit to pull over. DO NOT depend on jacks to hold up the vehicle while you’re under it. Have the container for the used oil placed under the oil pan and use the wrench to remove the oil plug.

It will help the oil to drain if you remove the oil fill cap in the valve cover. Be careful, they will be hot. Then use your oil filter wrench to remove your oil filter. Again be careful it will be hot. Use a little oil to lubricate the seal on your new oil filter and install it according to the directions. It will probable only have to be hand tightened. After the oil has stopped draining out of the oil pan you can replace the oil plug and tighten it so it will not fall out but don’t over tighten or it may ruin the threads. Then fill the crankcase with the proper amount of oil for your engine. Too little or too much oil may harm your engine and result in an expensive repair bill. Now start your engine and make sure that there is no oil leaking. Clean up and dispose of the oil, oil filter and oil containers properly and put the vehicle back on the ground if necessary. Now you are ready to drive your car with the satisfaction of having serviced it yourself.
