"Changing the oil and oil filter in
your vehicle is important"
Changing the oil and oil filter in your vehicle is important regular maintenance to help extend the life of your
engine. It is fairly simple and doesn’t require a tool chest full of tools. If you are not familiar with the terms
and references used here go ask someone who does or look them up in a repair manual or online because this does
need to be done correctly. You will need a wrench for the oil plug, check to make sure you have right size wrench,
something to drain the used oil in and an oil filter wrench. You will also need some ramps or jack stands to have a
safe way to get under your vehicle unless it sits high enough to crawl under it or unless you have the use of an
auto shop with a car lift on a pit to pull over. There are probably places where you can take the used oil to have
it recycled. Just call around and ask. Get your supplies wherever auto parts are sold. You can either look up the
make, model and engine size of your vehicle to get the correct oil filter, the proper weight of oil ,( 5w30 for an
example,) and the amount of oil needed to refill your engine or ask an employee for help. First start your engine
and let it warm up. This helps the oil to drain more efficiently. Then pull your front wheels up on ramps or jack
up the front of your vehicle and put it on jack stands unless, as mentioned above, you have the use of an auto shop
with a lift or a pit to pull over. DO NOT depend on jacks to hold up the vehicle while you’re under it. Have the
container for the used oil placed under the oil pan and use the wrench to remove the oil plug. It will help the oil
to drain if you remove the oil fill cap in the valve cover. Be careful, they will be hot. Then use your oil filter
wrench to remove your oil filter. Again be careful it will be hot. Use a little oil to lubricate the seal on your
new oil filter and install it according to the directions. It will probable only have to be hand tightened. After
the oil has stopped draining out of the oil pan you can replace the oil plug and tighten it so it will not fall out
but don’t over tighten or it may ruin the threads. Then fill the crankcase with the proper amount of oil for your
engine. Too little or too much oil may harm your engine and result in an expensive repair bill. Now start your
engine and make sure that there is no oil leaking. Clean up and dispose of the oil, oil filter and oil containers
properly and put the vehicle back on the ground if necessary. Now you are ready to drive your car with the
satisfaction of having serviced it yourself. oil change
