Cars are as delicate as human's just because they are mechanical doesn’t mean they don’t need some
maintenance! Giving your car an oil change at every 3k miles
means more enjoyable miles for you and less of a headache for the future. Ok let's begin step by step on how
you would be able to perform an oil change on your vehicle!
Be smart and please don't change your oil when it's piping hot, you might get severely
burned.
What you would need
A decent Ratchet or open end wrench to unscrew the oil plug.
An oil filter wrench or if your handy enough you can even remove the oil filter with your own bare hands ( Proceed
with Caution not really a smart idea)
Oil catch so you can put in the used oil safely.
Funnel to put the new oil into the engine without making a huge mess!
New oil filter so you can replace the old oil filter
New oil, Make sure it matches the requirements in your owners manual.
Clean rag or any type of rag because you might need to wipe your hands or wipe an area that you accidentally
spilled oil on.
Alright let's get this party started!
Plan to change your motor oil every three thousand miles or every three months which ever occur
first. This will lead way to keep your motor running happy and healthy for years on end! The necessary tools to complete an oil change is a socket set a oil drain
pan and a jack and jack stands for safety. Instead of using a socket set you can also use a wrench set which
is pretty much which most mechanics use and can be cheaper than a socket set. Run the car for 10 minutes if
the engine is cold to warm up the oil before you drain the oil, warm oil drains faster than cold oil park the
car on a level surface either chock the rear tires with a chock or engage the parking brake. Now turn the
engine off and jack up the car so you can get underneath to drain the oil! Don't forget to use the jack
stands for safety. Open up the hood of your car place the new oil and funnel on top of the engine so you
don't forget to fill the car up with oil after draining the old oil. Make sure the car is securely supported
on the jack stands before you crawl underneath of your vehicle. Never get under a car that is only supported
by a jack. A pair of jack stands cost less than twenty dollars and if you wish to change your own oil
regularly then investing in a pair of jack stands is ideal.
Once the car is securely supported crawl underneath the car, locate the oil drain plug underneath
the car you can consult the owner's manual for the exact location, place the oil drain pan underneath the oil
drain plug to catch the old oil. Loosen the plug either with a socket wrench or a normal wrench which ever
you have. Remember to turn counter clockwise and remove the oil drain plug fully once it is opened up. Remove
the plug by hand when it is moving freely to make it safer and quicker for yourself. Be prepared for a rush
of hot oil, let the old oil drain into the oil pan and hold on to the oil plug. Once the oil is fully drained
reinstall the oil plug back into it's place always start to thread the bolts by hand to prevent cross
threading. Now wipe off the drain plug area and begin tightening the oil plug DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.
Now locate the existing oil filter. Position the oil pan underneath the oil filter to catch the
draining oil. Remove the filter with an oil filter wrench or by hand (NOT RECOMMENDED). Screw the new oil
filter in by hand. Tighten as tight as possible by hand. Do not over tighten with the oil filter
wrench.
Locate and remove the oil filler cap on top of the
engine. Place the funnel and fill up the engine with oil… 4-5 quarts are generally needed please consult your
owner's manual for what type and how much oil is needed in your
vehicle once you have filled up the oil run the engine for a minute and check the dipstick to see if you have
over filled or if you need to add more oil if necessary. Check for leaks and make sure you clean up after
yourself. If there are any drops of oil on the floor wipe them with a rag.
Dispose of used oil properly either take it to a recycling center with your oil filter or to a local
mechanic shop so they can dispose of the oil properly.
You have now changed the oil in your vehicle congratulations you have saved yourself some
money!
